One of the first days of work at The Colbent Corporation I was
assigned the task to remove several desks and chairs. These were no ordinary desks, they weighed about 500 pounds
each, the desks that is. So to
begin this task we had to drive all the way home to get Mike’s truck, and then
we had to drive all the way back. Once
we were finally back we began. We had
to move the desks from the back room in the warehouse. The same back room that we had to move
all of the boxes into for the people up stairs. Finally once all of the boxes were in the warehouse instead
of the room we began to have problems.
We had to move them about one hundred feet to a loading dock. Then from the loading dock we had to
drop them into Mike’s truck, which was about three feet lower than ground level
of the loading dock. This only
caused us a problem for about ten minutes, and being the smart kids that we are
we decided it would be best to get a pallet jack, a device made to move
thousands of pounds of boxes on pallets, and put three desks on at a time. This started out a great idea because
it made them much easier to move more quickly. The only problem was they could not fit through the door to
get them out to the loading dock. So
after another ten minutes of working out how we could do this, we decided we
would just slide them from there, and then slide them off the edge into his
truck. This was loud and obnoxious
but the only way possible. This
was a day were we didn’t do much business but we did learn how to move a bunch
of heavy things.
