This Monday was a great start to the website. With the theme
picked and the organization and experimenting behind me I was able to really
jump into esthetical part of the website. It was time to make this thing look
both pretty and full of Gardner Project spirit. Although the website it
prominently black and white, because that what we loved about it when we picked
the theme, we added a few pops of color in certain areas so that it would seem
upbeat yet still sleek. Purple was our color of choice. We added small accents
of purple. We then designed a logo that incorporated a tree. Representing the
strong roots but branches to reach out to people in all directions and also in
a way a “tree of life”. Once we designed a logo, with Ms. Epp’s wonderful help
again, we then were able to put in on our website. I was very pleased with the
logo because I felt as though it really represented this project perfectly.
Monday also consisted of things like creating a Google account for the Gardner
Project so that we were able to have a separate email and a Google calendar
that will be able to hold all upcoming events, that will show up on the
website. Monday was a really busy day but got us excited to finish so that our
website would be fully complete. Although Monday was busy and successful
yesterday and today were the days that really brought everything together.

Blog for Friday
It is now Wednesday but I will be blogging about Friday
because I forgot to do that last week. As you may have noticed me journals have
become very repetitive for the simply reason being that the last two weeks have
been solely focused on getting The Gardner Project website up and running.
Although you may think this is an easy task, like I thought at the beginning,
you would be quickly mistaken. Wordpress can either be complicated of simple
depending on the theme that is chosen. After having switched themes, or
templates if you will, we finally chose our lasting template, which is called “Backstreet”.
This template is very clean lined because it is designed to be mainly in back
and white, which Mr. Wallimann loved. Friday consisted of getting the third theme
that we were trying, to work for us. As I clicked millions of bottoms and put
in a bunch of “fillers” to see where everything ended up after I posted things I
finally got the hang on it and Mr. Wallimann finally seemed content with this
theme. Relieved, I kept playing around with the theme and seeing how to get
everything organized in a way that would work for us. Friday pretty much
consisted of getting used to another theme and trying to figure out all the
little details to things. It also consisted of more meeting with Ms. Epp, which
I was starting to feel bad for because I didn’t want to use her time.

Tuesdays blog
Today has been a little bit of a better day in the SCORE area of things. The internet is working a little bit better in the school today because less people are on it so it is not as slow as it was yesterday, it’s actually usable for once in my high school career. So with our theme up and running I was able to get a few pictures up loaded as testers. When first choosing a theme the key is to play around with the new word press template so that you can see where everything ends up going once you type it into certain areas. So today we were able to move things around and organize what content we want and where we want it to be shown. We also designed a logo that will hopefully workout for our website. We incorporated a “tree of life” kind of thing because our mission is to try and better the life of others through fundraising and working with nongovernmental organizations to do so. A globe would also be a good image to incorporate because the Global Issues class has worked in Haiti and Cambodia now, so we have been on a global scale. It may take me a few different attempts in order to get it perfect and Ms. Epp’s help will be helpful too. I also need to come up with a paragraph quoting Mr. Wallimann on why he wanted to do this with his class and how he actually made it reality.
Mondays blog
These blogs are going to start becoming pretty repetitive, even though they have already been very repetitive, because the next two weeks I will just be working on the website. We have SO much to do for the website and I feel like we have so little time. Yesterday we had to change the theme AGAIN. It was possibly the worst thing ever because it was just another confusing theme to have to learn how to use. But I guess that’s just how it has to go when you are designing a website for someone else’s class and to someone else likes. It is also really hard to try and explain that something will look really great at than end because people can’t really see the end product, which I can’t be blamed. I can’t wait until everything gets done and the finish product comes out great. Yesterday while I was in my second meeting of the day with Ms. Epp the computers were so slow that we couldn’t even get onto our website which is just another really frustrating aspect but I won’t go on a rant about that, as much as I want to. So while we were trying to figure out how to get the computers working faster I resorted to just working on the content of the website again. I really just wanted to get our theme working correctly but since the internet in the school is god awful we were unable to do that. Lucky today has been a better day.
Fridays Blog
I missed Friday’s blog again because I was just too busy. Friday was really the start to the website day. It was a frustrating day because we had already kind of settled on a theme but then we went against what we had been working on. This means that we had to change everything and reorganize and find a whole new theme. By the end of the day and a long meeting for Ms. Epp we finally found a new theme to work with. After trying to figure out all the different settings for the new theme we were able to get comfortable and start working with a fresh theme. It was kind of hard to get used to. Although I though word press seemed simple in the beginning I have now learnt that it can be everything besides simple or easy. Thank god I have Ms. Epp to help me because I would never be able to do it on my own. Friday consisted mainly of trying to reset and get working with the new theme. It took pretty much the whole day to do this. I also did a lot of content stuff that was really time consuming. It is really important to get all the content and photos that want to be used on the site into one folder so that we will be able to simple copy and paste them into the spots on the website. Friday was a frustrating day but it was a step forward.

Nicole: SCORE
Yesterday was a really exciting day for me. We finally
learned how to use word press and finally get our website up and running. The
first thing yesterday, when I came in for SCORE, is I went to Mr. Wallimann’s
room and bought the URL, or domain, for our website. It wasn’t hard at all. I
simply went to Godaddy.com and typed in thegardnerproject.org to see if it was
available for us to use. Once the URL was purchased I then went down to Ms. Epp
and asked her to put it on her hosting cite so that our new website would be
able to be used by the public. She gladly did that and went on to show us more
about how the web world works. She gave us many helpful tips that I struggled
to take in all at once. With the help of Ms. Epp and our little meeting we were
able to get up on our feet and start working on the website. Yesterday was
pretty much the day to get the “bones and structure” of the website so that we
could then fill in the content aspect of it later on in the future. Building a
website really isn’t as hard as everyone made it sound, I know we aren’t done
with ours yet but so far it has been pretty fun and fairly self explanatory. We
set up where everything was to go and made it maneuverable by the public. The
rest of SCORE should be pretty busy.

Just another SCORE blog
Today is Monday May 6th, 2013 and I am blogging about just another day at SCORE. Already today has been quite busy. I had to make MORE of the packets to hand out to the Essex Elementary School so that we could get an upper hand on advertising. I have really learned a lot about how to advertise and who to target in certain circumstances. After printing thirteen informational letters, for teachers, and about three hundred or more flyers, for students and families, I tediously counted twenty five flyers for every one information letter and paper clipped each packet. After making about fourteen packets I found it time to go and deliver them in the same way that I did when delivering to the Manchester Memorial Elementary School. This time, Mrs. Randall who I knew well, seemed every excited and put them straight into the teachers mailboxes and was happy and thankful that we were doing this. Her enthusiasm really reenergized me about advertising. That is until I realized that I should really be going to the near by preschools and doing the same things. No, I don’t want to make more packets. So I guess when I am done having lunch I will make my way back to school to make MORE packets. I also have a very busy afternoon ahead of delivering checks and setting up meetings and making packets. I guess this is just how the fundraising world works but honestly at least it is going to a good cause.
Blog for May 3rd!
I totally forgot to write my third blog entry for last week
because Friday happened to be really busy. With the skate night fundraiser approaching
rapidly I have been working hard to advertise for the fundraiser in hopes that
we will have a great outcome. Kelsi and I took the packets that we had constructed
over to the Manchester Memorial Elementary School and presented them to the
front office. We kindly asked the secretary to put them in each teacher’s
mailbox so that they would be able to give the students the “Family Skate”
flyers. After explaining what our cause was she told us that she would give
them to the principle to review and then proceed to distribute them to each
teacher. What each packet consisted of was; one informational letter (aimed
toward the teacher to help them understand our cause) and twenty-five “Family
Skate” flyers for the little students to give to their families. After spending
a significant amount of time making and handing out the packets I then
proceeded to put a few more flyers around town in places that I missed earlier
in the week. After getting all the advertising under control for the day I went
back to the school to find Ms. Epp in hopes of setting up a concrete time to
meet for website help. I was told to come back the day before I wanted to meet
and make a time then, which is what I am going to do. I finished my day with
calling my sister and asking her for help with my website design, because that’s
what she does as a career.

Score
Today’s blog will consist of exciting things. I woke up and
made my way to the school for a meeting with Mr. Wallimann, the usual routine.
My job for the day is to write up an email for the elementary school teacher’s
so that they are able to give packets to their students that have information
on the family skate that we are holding. Hopefully if this whole task gets done
today we will be able to present the packets to the students of the elementary schools
of both Manchester and Essex tomorrow in hopes that the families will mark
their calendars. I also have to make a giant pizza cookie as a thank you to
Cape Ann Pizza for holding the second restaurant fundraiser yesterday. I am
currently in the process of making the cookie pizza and it is taking forever to
cook. Not only is it taking forever to cook but in the process of getting it
into a HUGE circular shape I burnt my finger pretty badly. It’s not as easy as
it looks, I just pray to god that it cooks evenly but I have a hidden suspicion
that it might get burnt on the bottom but soft on the top. If that ends up
being the case I will be quite upset but don’t worry I have a plan B. I made
twenty four fudge brownie cupcakes with fudge frosting in case the cookie fails
miserably. Okay well I have tons to do today so tootles!
Score
Yesterday I did a lot of complicated stuff for SCORE that
was rather time consuming. I woke up and went right to school at eight forty
five for a meeting with Mr. Jewett. This meeting was organized so that we could
discuss word press, a tool to help us design and create the Gardner Project
website. Before our meeting I had done a great amount of research on word press
and found that it seemed to be VERY complicated with coding and set up stuff.
During the meeting with Mr. Jewett he seemed to make it sound much easier. He
was willing to give us his time to explain the pros and cons of word press in
comparison to other web designing sites. After a short discussion the choice
seemed to stay with word press as our primary web designer. With this choice
made it was easy to move forward with more research. I took my day looking up
different themes that would work for us but now had a much narrower search then
previous days because I knew what I needed to find. I looked up free templates
and started reading reviews and testing them out. After looking through
hundreds of themes and reading hundreds of reviews I finally was able to make a
detailed list of five possibilities that would work for what we were looking to
do. I then typed out all the pros and cons for each and a same description of
each so that way I could present them to Mr. Wallimann.

SCORE
Today is Wednesday April twenty fourth and I have spent another day working very hard to making money for the Somaly Mam Foundation. I finished up with making advertising flyers for the two events that I organized yesterday and Monday. I also organized an email list that I would be sending the event news out to in order to get people excited about our events. Today I switched gears a little bit. I focused more on the website then the fundraising side of my SCORE internship. The website looks like it wouldn’t be to much more but the further I go into researching about the website stuff the more complicated it begins to look. Today I went further into depth when looking at the themes that we could possibly use. I then read the reviews in depth and wrote the pros and cons down for each website theme. I also looked on other website for other themes. I am not a fan of Word press I feel as though there are better options for us to use. Mr. Jewett is very helpful. We set up a meeting for Monday at 8:45am. I am excited to have this meeting so I can get some tips on how to build a really great website. Today was really successful because I got so much stuff done. Tomorrow should be a really busy day filled with lots of phone calls and organizing. I really just need to solidify a place to have the car wash.

More SCORE
Well today was a great day. It involved a lot of creativity and also a lot of tedious tasks. I started the day where I left off yesterday, with no place to hold our car wash. It was frustrating because I thought of a bunch of different places to hold it. Some of the places were; Walgreens in Danvers, Stop & Shop in Beverly, Liberty Tree Mall, and a bunch of other places. I called around to each and got a no from Stop & Shop and Walgreens. I even mentioned our cause and fully explained where the money would be going but nope. I don’t understand how someone could say no to using part of their parking lot for just a few hours for such a good cause. Sometimes I really wonder what people are thinking. Anyway I moved forward and contacted the Liberty Tree Mall and they seemed to have a positive attitude and told me to email them a proposal and they would get back to me. So after emailing them a detailed email I did a bunch of other things. Since we have a date and time for family skate night I was able to fully design a flyer for it and be creative with it which was really fun for me! I then made a list of what we would need for each event ranging from volunteers to be at the event or to make baked goods for the bake sale at the event. That was not the end of my day but that is where I will end this entry.
SCORE BLOG!
Yesterday was a very productive day in the Somaly Mam office of Manchester Essex Regional High School. We just recently found out that out musical act will not be able to make an appearance. With this unfortunate information there was nothing to do besides cancel this fundraiser and start brainstorming and planning a whole new event. Seeing as everything on our list was going to be pretty small we chose two and starting the planning process. We budgeted out what our costs would end up being and the final profit. After doing that we were able to figure out which ones would bring us the most money. What we ended up picking was a family skate night in Gloucester, MA at the O’Maley ice rink. We are going to target the elementary, middle, and high school. We had to contact the O’maley ice rink for pricing and dates/times that would work. We finally came up with May 18th from 1-4pm. Now that we had one fundraiser down it was on to planning the second one. We decided on a big car wash. Not just a car wash at Manchester Essex High School because that just wouldn’t bring enough money but instead we brainstormed a list of places that have higher traffic. We thought that we had found the perfect place but after talking to them on the phone they ensured me that it would not be possible to hold a car wash in their parking lot. They said they didn’t do that anymore. So We ended the day without a place to hold a car wash.

Blog Number Three
SCORE
is going really great. I am now on my third blog and have so many things to say
that it might be hard to fit them into two hundred and fifty words but I will
do my best. I am so glad I decided to work to raise more money for Somaly Mam because
I am starting to realize, in more depth, that this is exactly what I want to do
with my life. Although I had to make so many phone calls yesterday and track
people down I am always motivated by the thought of where the money is going.
My day yesterday consisted of trying to pin down a date for the fundraiser. I
know that might sound simply but it’s far more complex. In order to find the
right date for our fundraiser I had to try and find an open day to fit the
chapel rental, our music act, and the right night for the community. Seeing as
our music act has no phone number getting a hold of him consisted of me called
around town to people that have organized his performances before and see if
they could point me in the right direction. After a long conversation with the
first woman I called I was excited to use the contact information she gave me
to get talk to our performer. I guess I shouldn’t have been, she gave me the completely
wrong email; as a matter of fact the email she gave me doesn’t even exist.
Anyway I will start where I left off on Monday morning, wish me luck.

DAY TWO
Yesterday was my second day of SCORE and it went just as smoothly as my first day! I am getting more and more excited for SCORE the further I get into it. Yesterday I was able to be very creative in the things that I did. I ended up drawing out and designing an entire website for the Gardner Project. This task was extremely time-consuming because I had to plan out every inch of the website as well as fine a way to get all the information onto the appropriate page. After finding away to neatly organize all the information I was then able to draw out and color each page of the website. In total there were 7 pages. The website was not all that I had to do yesterday. I went down to Mr. Murphy and asked him a few questions about the possibility of us being able to hold a certain fundraiser. After getting the ramifications for the Cornwell Chapel fundraiser I went to Mrs. Hunt to get her input on what would work best. I also completed an entire PROS and CONS list for two separate fundraisers. The purpose of me doing this was to be able to figure out which would work best for us and which would bring us the most money. Yesterday really gave me an idea of what it would be like to be an employee of a nonprofit organization. Although yesterday was a lot of work I really enjoyed it and I am excited to get this moving and raise more money!

First Day of SCORE!
First day of SCORE down. My day was very successful. It
allowed me to get organized for the next six weeks to come. Kelsi and I found a
nice little office to work out of and got straight to work. We planned out an
exact to do list of what we would need to get done in order to reach our goal
of organizing a successful fundraiser. We wrote down all the contacts we would
need and the phone calls we would need to make. I made a few phone calls in
order to found out the details on pricing for our fundraiser. This took longer
then I expected because after doing that I had to figure out what would be an appropriate
price for the fundraiser tickets. With our extensive list of things we need to do for the
fundraiser we then got to work looking at themes for our website and making
another to do list for the website. The website was going to be a lot more work
then we had realized but personally I am very excited to make the Global Issues
class’s Gardner Project its own website! I found a few different themes that
may or may not work and read the reviews people had left. I then narrowed the
list down the two web themes that I thought would work best for what we were
looking to do. I couldn’t be happier with my SCORE internship because I know
that at the end of all this hard work I will be helping other people with the
money that we end up raising.
