week 5
Today at my day at score I got to go to
the uniform store with one of the officers. This store is for police,
fire and other emergency personal. This is were every officer goes to
get new uniforms, equipment or even just get something fixed with one
of there duty shirts. The reason that I got to go today was because I
had to get myself some uniforms for the up coming summer. My job will
be a lot of fun I am hoping. I am going to be a parking enforcement
officer for the town of Manchester. I also am becoming a auxiliary
police officer. That is were you start off a lot of the time. Also
the memorial day weekend is coming up. In the town of Manchester they
hold a parade to show support of the men and women who have fought
and falling protecting all our freedoms as Americans. So the
department has to look its best for the event. So the Sunday before I
will be coming into the station to clean all the cars that will be
used. A lot of people would probably think it would stink to do that
but I do not mind it at all. The way I look at it is I am starting
out at the bottom and working my way up. I am actually looking
forward to it. With the last week of score coming I will most likely
start my training for my summer job soon. It should be fun!

learning the ropes
Today on score I got to go out on a
patrol. On that patrol I began my training to become a parking
enforcement officer, which I will be doing this summer. It was good
because the officer who I was with did the parking job a couple years
before and was very good at it. He began showing me the streets I
will have to walk up and down checking for stickers, and out of town
people. I got to know the non parking spots in town to. I cant wait
tho for the summer, because I really a looking forward to this job
and its a good start to a career in this field of work. Also I will
be becoming a auxiliary police officer. That is a non paying police
officer basically. Its a great way to learn first hand what to do and
to really see what happens on the streets. For example I will be able
to go out on patrol at night. That will also be a great start to my
career in law enforcement. I’ve been wanting to do auxiliary for
quit some time now, ever since I was a 8th grader at
least. Well again I think that my score project is going very well
and I am learning so much in just a short period of time and it can
only get better and better from here on out.

Jacob: working the desk
Today I worked on the dispatch again.
I’m really beginning to get the hang of it I think. A big part of
working or running the desk a.k.a dispatch is knowing how to fill
shifts and details when they come in. if a officer calls out sick or
cant make it to work for his or her shift then the person working the
desk will have to fill it as o.t (overtime). That includes filling
out a sheet that is just for overtime. Then you have to call officers
to see if they want to take it. If they do not answer, you have to
leave a voice mail and wait with for 15 minutes from when you called
to call another officer. This is the same for details only for
details its not overtime. You can only take a detail if you aren’t
working a shift during that time. If no one in the department takes a
detail in town, then you have to call other local towns to see if any
of there guys will take it. Also a lot of the time other towns call
Manchester for details in there towns. In that case if the detail has
to be filled fast then you don’t have to wait the 15 minute between
calling each officer. So that’s a little easier because its faster.
I’ve really enjoyed my stay at the Manchester by the sea police
department so far and it can only get better from here.

workin the night shift
Over the break when we didnt have to go
in for score I went in and did a few of the night shifts. They go
from 4 pm to mid night. Working the night shift is a lot different
from working the day. It has its own challenges because people are a
lot lend to do more stupid things at that time. Another thing is that
working in such a small town, there are not a lot of people around at
night so it can be slow at times. I really enjoyed working the night
shift because there is a lot more of the action and there is a lot
more things to do. While growing up my father always worked nights
because it felt him free in the morning to do details. Details are
when you see police officers doing traffic on the road. A lot of
officers today not only in this town but around the country really
count on details as a big part of there yearly salary. A down side of
working the night shift is that the hours can be really tough on the
officer and he or her family because they are not home at night. Its
not like having a regular job from monday to friday. Police officers
have a very tough schedule. So if I ever become a police officer some
day like I hope too I really hope I can get a chance to work nights
because thats were you get most of the action

Jacob: week 1, blog 2
Today was my second day of being a intern at the Manchester police department. I was able to do learn how to work the dispatch desk and got to go on a ride along with one of the officers. I learned that running the desk as they call it, is not very easy. The biggest thing you have to do is to log into the computer about 80% of the things that happen. For example, if a officer on the road goes over the air on the radio saying that he will be doing radar somewhere, then the person on the desk will log that into the computer, saying which officer it was the time, and street he is on. Also the person on the desk has to answer 911 calls and dispatch units to the scene. I also got to fill a detail for the day. That included calling officers and seeing if they wanted to take it. During the ride alone and a Call came in over the air for a alarm at some ones home. It turned out to be a false alarm and the home owners were not even home. Tomorrow I will be going to court to shadow a officer from the department and get to listen in on his hearings he has. The hearings will be for people with over due parking tickets. Its nothing major but a good way start and go to court for the first time I’m really looking forward to it, and it should be a good experience.

Thesis
Community policing is more useful in the age of modern technology than 50 years ago. Currently most people have access to or own several pieces of technology which can help local Police Departments stay connected with residents. My hope is to interview members of the Manchester Police Department to find out how they utilize technology today.
P1
Community policing as it used to be;
Police Officers walked the beat and knew everyone in their neighborhoods. There was a local Policeman who probably had grown up right in the area and knew a lot of people, and their families.
The only way local people got the local news and information was once a day on the local television news, newspaper, or from local gossip.
People tended to stay in the community they were born in, and it was more of a real family environment.
Community policing now;
There is not really a local Police Officer for most suburban areas.
The local police department is made up of Policeman from all over and not just local born and bred Officers.
Police presently use various media outlets. For example twitter, Facebook, email and different smart phone apps.
Community policing has also changed for the police officers themselves because they have adapt with all the technology changes, they now have to be online and communicating to the people that way as well.
The things that I will be talking about the most in my paper will Facebook and news updates threw email. I know they have a Facebook page because I follow them on my Facebook, and my mother says she receives emails from the police department quit frequently.
