week 5 blog 3 get organized
For weeks Ella and I have been working on this huge project that is finally coming to end for us. We had organized and alphabetized all the businesses that had advertised with us. After organizing all of them, which was well over one hundred, we took each cabinet file out single handedly and opened it up to find all the time order and pink slips. The time orders and pink slips tell us when they last advertised with us, how much they spend advertising, who to contact, what their number was, and obviously what the business is and where they were located. Most of the time these businesses had multiple pink slips and time orders and it would take us forever to write down how much they had spent and add it all up to a final total price and if you couldn't read the writing for the contact info and numbers then you would spend like 10 minutes guessing and trying to figure that out. Finally after all this work we had to research any events or new information and news about these places to figure out a good reason to call them back and try and have them come on air with us again. Some of these businesses are really small and somewhat local and don't have websites or are even out of business and it would take us about an hour to figure that out. Finally it's so close to being done and our boss is going to be so happy that they are completely organized again in the advertising part of the radio station.

week 5 post 2 moving
At Beverly's North Shore 104.9 there's quite a few rooms and space to work from. We have quite a few interns including myself and Ella and then we have quite a few employees too. There are lot's of computers but I bring my laptop that way if I have to move around. JoAnn Gillette and Joann Flannery both have private offices because they are vice presidents and then everyone gets their own desk and cubicle to work from. Ella gets the computer because I bring in my laptop so it makes it easy for us to both work at the same time. Sometimes when Dan, who is another intern, needs the desk and computer cubicle we are at we go up stairs to the lunch room and work from their on our own computers. It's nice because no matter where we work there is always enough space for privacy and to get your work done but at the same time upstairs or downstairs its all open so we can all hear each other and talk to each other without shouting over anyone or feeling like you are completely closed off from everyone else. The only places that are really closed off are two rooms. The recording room which needs quiet when recording obviously and the sound boards room which also needs some sort of privacy to listen to the radio and manage the sound stuff. I have been privileged to be in every room of the North Shore 104.9 and they are all pretty cool. It's also comforting to know you are restricted from any area.

Week 5 blog 1 tough
Interacting with people comes very naturally to me. I think
it’s easy if you find common ground to talk about or find the right things to
say at the right time. Generally for me that’s exactly what I’m good at.
However I have come to realize that not everyone will like you and be easy to
work with. Fortunately for me my job involves interacting with people all the
time. Not only at work but the job itself involves me interviewing student
athletes from Cape Ann sponsored by Cape Ann Savings Bank and making them point
out their great qualities and achievements on air for our listeners to hear. So
far the show has really gone great! However I have run into a few bumps with
the student athletes who didn’t take me as seriously because I am their age.
Most of the kids get back to me right away saying they would love to be on the
show and talk about themselves for about 10 minutes here or there but a couple
would say sure and vaguely answer any questions I had for them. It’s hard to
put on a good show when the kid you are talking to doesn’t want to share their
achievements or anything before the actual show because then we don’t know what
kind of questions to ask. It’s even worse when the kid has so much to say
before the show and then says pretty much nothing when on air. It’s a very
comfortable setting so I’m not sure why kids respond like this.

Blog 2 week 4 driving
After stamping hundreds of buy one get one free ice cream for captain dusty's ella and I headed out all over the north shore. We drove for about 5 hours going all the way to Salisbury, Topsfield, Lowell, Gloucester, Essex, Beverly and a bunch of cities and towns that had businesses that advertised with us on the radio station. It was really a good advertisement for us because once we dropped off all the stickers we left them for anyone at that businesses and all their customers to take. After going back and picking them up we noticed that they were in fact all gone so either people really like our radio station or they really like captain dusty's ice cream. Hopefully it's a lot of both. The owners and workers of the businesses couldn't believe how mature we were and most of them asked about SCORE and what it was. When we explained they thought it was so cool that we get this opportunity and we couldn't have agreed more. It's kind of nerve racking to drive the company car because if you damage it get in accident it looks bad on you and it's your responsibility to fix it. However if it's not your fault obviously its their problem to fix but it still doesn't look great for you and chances are you won't be taking the company car out for errands again. Obviously we don't have to pay for gas because it's part of our job or volunteer service to do this for them but it's nice and a bonus. We even got to keep a bunch of bumper stickers for ourselves and friends when there were extra and we soon found out that if you are spotted with the bumper sticker on your car you get the opportunity to win free gas from our station!
Week 4 blog 3 cheerleading
Cheerleading is most of the time over looked by the majority of athletes as a sport. Little did we know that how much hard work these girls go through. This saturday north shore sports desk on 104.9 picked Allie Biondo from Gloucester High School cheerleading team. When I first interviewed Allie before the show to get a feel for her life and what cheerleading was really like. The first thing she said was how grateful she was for being picked as a cheerleading because they are completely over looked as athletes and considering they just won first at nationals she thought herself and the team deserved some credit and notice and she was completely right they totally did. She and her team trained all winter and came back from winter season stronger than ever working on skills in other gyms that they would be able to knock down if they were to get a bid for nationals, which they did. Allie explained how much of a team effort it really is. In sports its possible to have a star person to carry a team or play an individual sport like tennis and be able to win all for yourself but for cheerleading if one person is off the whole team is off since it's a planned routine event. People make fun of them for looking like peppy super nice girls but it's part of the area the get critiqued on during competition. Do you know how hard it is to flip through the air and keep a perfect smile on your face not knowing if your team mates are going to catch you or not? Pretty hard explained Allie Biondo. Being a captain for her meant a lot because she said watching everyone grow was the most amazing thing ever. She said that this years team was the best team Gloucester has seen in a while and hopefully they can keep that ball rolling for future teams down the road so people can credit them a little more and realize they work just as hard as any other athlete out there.

Week 4 blog 1 STICKERS
Today my co-worker, Ella and I get to do something really fun. Captain Dusty's donated a ton of free ice cream by giving us the opportunity to print on the back of North Shore 104.9 bumper stickers by one get one ice cream free at Captain Dusty's coupon. Ella and I will take the super cool north shore 104.9 crazy car and drive them to several loyal and new businesses that advertise with us or potentially will advertise with us on the radio and hand out these coupons to attract business!!! Not only is it cool enough that we get to drive all over the north shore but we get to keep a few for ourselves and family and if were lucky a couple for our friends. I don't think we will really hand to many out to our friends because the point of it is to gain some attention to the station and even though it is a radio station for everyone and everywhere it's not really what most teenagers prefer to listen to with the exception of the few like myself. We are going to drive to Beverly, (easy since we are located in the Beverly) Topsfield, Lowell, Salisbury, North Andover and Salem. This is going to be a long but fun project and will teach us the responsibility of being time efficient and being able to navigate ourselves through un familiar areas which I'm sure will not be the last time that we have to do something like this in our lives. The only downside to this job or project is my hand is absolutely throbbing from stamping seriously more than 1000 gift certificates. It could be even close to 2000 certificates because were supposed to give about 200 to each business and have like 10 or more businesses to get to. The best part of the day is we are delivering them to the butcher boy which has the best meets and pastries in the entire North Shore in my opinion. Although I spend about a 100 on food every week so I am going to try my hardest not to buy anything at all!!!

Week 3 Blog 1 The Project
At score we have been assigned a new project that is most likely going take most likely the rest of score. Of course we can still do the usual things like we have been like selecting winners for coffee breaks and emailing dunkin runs winners as well but this project is about to take over our lives. I have to go through years of files from literally the 90's up till now of businesses and organize them alphabetically. After I organize it alphabetically I have to go through each and every one of them to find out how much that business spends broadcasting commercial time for the our radio station, the phone number of the contact person, who that person is that we can contact, when they were last on and a reason to give them a call to maybe get more airtime with them!!! Soooooo much work I know. But it's actually fun having such a big responsibility believe it or not. It makes you feel well accomplished when you get a whole letter section of businesses done because its just one more chapter you have got done of the huge project. I am really surprised she gave this huge responsibility to myself because if you mess up some of the businesses it could really affect the income of the radio station. Well back to work I go.

week 2 blog 3 athletes
All week I have been working on selecting a student Cape Ann Athlete of the week that shows characteristics to being a good role model for sports and as a student. For last week we had player profile Sophia Black from Gloucester who'm I did a pre interview trying to figure out the basic about her and her team as well as her family and social life. This then led to the hour on saturdays at North Shore 104.9 sports desk were Pete Kelley and Phil Stacey and myself do live interviews with athletes and coaches about sports. Sophia was really easy going and fun to interview and then later I had the opportunity to do the same routine with Courtney Nelson from Rockport and Joe Love from Hamilton Whenam. It's funny because 99 percent of the time I know the kid I'm about to interview so it makes the setting even more comfortable than it already is! My co workers gave me the opportunity to be the Cape Ann Athlete of the week next saturday and do a real live interview with me being there. They told people I rigged it but I really didn't they caught me by surprise on the radio haha! Anyways so far so good at North Shore 104.9 tune in!
week 2 blog 2 problems
I have finally come across problems during work. I was wondering when this was going to happen. The website in which I must update and edit for north shore events has been having a total freak out on me. The sad thing is it only doesn't work when I am alone and always works when someone else updates it or when I try to show my boss it isn't working, This sometimes can be really awkward and embarrassing but lucky for me my score advisor/ boss is quite the character and really funny. Instead I started a new project that is going to take forever. I had to organize alphabetically files of businesses that have paid for radio time for commercials. Some of them our recent and some are from years back. The ones that are from years back I have to do research on and find a reason for us to call them up and say hey want to start advertising with again? This can be really time consuming and tiring since you are standing doing this for hours but it's worth it and fun when you have a partner to help you out or something. Especially since all my co workers are super funny and listening to the radio and the conversations that linger is really relaxing and amusing.

Back From Vacay week 2 blog 1
I decided to split up my hours over vacation week to do 15 hours last week and 15 hours this week just because it's easier with sports. Last week for some reason I couldn't get into the blog but I did a lot of fun stuff before I got sick. I ran some errands and updated the web page for new events and people requesting to enter in our competitions. I love reading peoples entries for competitions because they are usually really funny and creative with their reasons to why they should be the winner. Even my brother entered and said his office team deserved a coffee break because I just turned 18 and they are all guys stressed out about me growing up and that their sales team works really hard. The best part about working every day is listening to music and the radio station that plays consistently through the work day.

3rd Blog of the Week- Trucking Through
It's my third day of work here at North Shore 104.9 and it's still as much fun as the first day! I really like this a lot better than school and I still feel like I am accomplishing a lot here and have a good sense of responsibility. Today I am researching and looking for the major advertisers in all of North Shore's newspapers and looking for new businesses in which we can get a hold of to advertise for them and promote their new business and even sometimes get gift certificates or things to give away on the radio. Yesterday I made the gift certificates to the new Stoneridege Tavern restaurant that just opened up. It might sound boring but it's more fun than you think. My coworkers are also really nice and bring in treats and stuff in the mornings sometimes or afternoon so we can all snack of relax a little cause it can be a lot of hard and stressful work making sure everything goes into place nicely because you can't leave room for error on a radio station. Especially live!!!! It's ok to mess up online and be able to fix it but when you are on the air or working with the soundboards in the back room it's really important you pay attention because when you mess up and it's someone who isn't familiar to the station listening it can lose customers or listeners and bring the ratings down. It's a little dramatic to say one mess up kills your ratings but it's obviously better to keep the errors to minimal.

Day 2 Events and COFFEE
For the past couple of years I have been trying to find out what are charities events around the North Shore. On top of that I wanted to figure out where and when 5k runs are so I can start participating in them. Never would I have imagine that after looking and googling everywhere North Shore 1049 radio station where I work advertises all these events. I am now the one who deciphers which events can go on the website and take in the emails and edit them to sell the event to others. However the events have to be 100 percent of the proceeds going to the charity or else it will not be posted or advertised from us. Or it can be a non charity and just something free like the Carabette Comedy Night at the Salisbury Beach Center. I also have learned how big intact the North Shore is. I knew all about the towns that are being spoken or talked about but had no idea they were apart of the North Shore Community. I'm learning so much more than just radio information and mass media and it is all to my benefit. Today JoAnn my boss explained to me how I will be able to take the radio station's car to pick up the Coffee Breakfast foods and drinks for the Friday Morning Coffee Break's winners. This is really cool for me because my job expands outside the office!!! Not to mention I love to see how excited and happy the people will be when their entire office is filled with free coffee, pastries, donuts and other things.
Paul McCartney
Yesterday my second of day of score was extremely cool. Working at North Shore's 104.9 gives me opportunities to do stuff I would never get to do anywhere else. I really like working with technology and JoAnn (my boss) has me posting non profit events and charities online on the North Shore 105.9 website. I have full access to the work email were I can check emails coming to me from my boss or other people entering in contests or wanting to share their events and advertise them on our website. The coolest thing I have done yet was being able to get a hold of Paul McCartney's promoters to score a couple of tickets to give away on the radio. It took almost two hours just to get of a hold of someone who knew how to get a hold of his promoter and then an hour to actually speak with his promoters at AEG Live Entertainment who also hosts concert tours around the world such as Usher, Coachella, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and multiple other big stars and huge events. The tour is the "Out There" tour and North Shore will most likely be giving away FREE tickets for the concert on July 8th at Fenway. Word on the street is mumford and sons will be joining him. The part I think I like best though is calling up winners for contests and letting them know they won. They get so excited and are so grateful that I can barely understand what they are saying on the other side of the phone. Even if it not tickets and it's coffee for their office and coworkers on Friday mornings. North Shore's 1049 is already teaching me a lot even about stuff on using Excel sheets and making different sorts of advertisements to get the attraction and attention of our listeners and potential future listeners.
