                                                Score outline for obesity

Why are so many teens obese today? Is it because they don’t have enough gym class in school? What are they doing for activities in their free time? For school interventions in every state, schools should take part in the problem of obesity focusing on how to get kids involved in physical activities. For example, the requirement for gym at Manchester Essex High School is physical activity for half the year, and then the rest of the school year is health classes until the semester ends. Although health classes are important, and topics such as nutrition, substance abuse, and physical health are taught, physical activities should also continue throughout the years. For those who are not playing sports after school, gym should be required all four years instead of just two years to reduce obesity so children can live a long healthy life. For my score project. I will be assisting Mr. Ricci-Munn in helping him to support teens in fighting obesity and to try and break through the answers of why there is obesity in the world.
In some cases, lack of physical activity may be due to having tons of homework. That’s fantastic because the kids are into getting excellent grades. The YGOY health community claims “about 15% or, to give exact figure, 9 million teens in America below 15 years of age are obese. This figure is almost three times the teen obesity figures in the year 1980.”(www.YGOY.com) The YGOY says that the causes for obesity are, “teenage obesity is from overeating, less activity or inactivity, and excess TV viewing.” When teens are not exercising enough and are a tiny bit obese, they will only get much worse and have a poor self image. Studies show that sitting at home all day eating mostly fast food has a huge impact on children they get drawn in as young children by the toys that go with the meal, and then start to develop a taste for the fast food. Children are falling into the fat trap and can’t get enough of the tasty food; therefore, they become addicted to the salt & sugar. Children don’t think about becoming obese from fast food and that the food is full of oil, salt, and fat to make the fries and burgers taste good. The advertisements don’t tell the real truth of about the health effects of the food. Schools have become more aware of the food quality and are slowly changes their food choices for children.
America has been stepping forward in trying to stop obesity by giving kids healthier foods, such as veggies, whole wheat pastas, sweet potato fries and no energy drinks. Schools should give more healthy options along with hamburgers such as turkey and veggie burgers. Unfortunately kids are throwing their food out because they’re not use to the healthier version. In some cases, schools have started their own gardens to supplement the cafeteria food. At least when the schools are planting some of the food in a garden the veggies don’t have any chemicals inside to change the taste of the food. These gardens can be another way of introducing healthy foods to children who may not have healthy food at home. It can help teach them that they can take control of what they eat along with exercising more. This can be another way to help fight obesity.

Adrian's Blog Post #15(Week 5) - Jewett

I will admit, I didn't do a single thing my final day at the Chamber of Commerce. I spent the time talking to everyone in the office, filling them in on my plans moving forward, where I was going to school, etc. It was quite interesting, because a lot of them had some insightful college advice from their own personal college experience as well as that of their children. Robert, our CEO, shared some funny stories about his time spent in the Air Force, and Sharon had a few good ones about how she and her twin would switch places, or claim to be the other when they visited each other's schools. Around noon, we all piled into the conference room, Susan ordered pizzas to celebrate my last day, along with Jim's birthday. Along with a card signed by everyone in the office, I was given the L. Dexter Woodman Scholarship, which is a scholarship sponsored by the Chamber. It was a great ending to a wonderful experience as an intern at the Chamber.
As I have said, I discovered that I would definitely like to work in an office atmosphere, but I am not sure that the Chamber of Commerce is the right fit for me. I would prefer to work in a business circulating around a product or a group of products, and possibly be involved in the marketing or communications aspect of the office. I am glad that I was able to gain experience in an office environment, working with and among other people.

Adrian's Blog Post #14(Week 5) - Jewett

On Thursday, a majority of the office was out at the monthly Business Luncheon that the Chamber hosts in order for all the local businesses to come together to mingle and network. Because of this I was given the responsibility of working the front desk for the day, which meant that I would be answering phone calls, working the switchboard, and dealing with tourists that come into the chamber looking for information.
I actually kind of enjoyed doing this, I discovered that I have a knack for working with people via telephone. It is probably because I have more patience with tourists and their somewhat dumb questions than the majority of the people in the Chamber. However, I can almost guarantee that that is due to how long they have all been working. I noticed a pattern of the target group of callers that day: old people. It is fairly well known that our Chamber is technologically integrated, so we do not run into many young to middle age people calling in about general information, but I found myself having to use google for a lot of the questions that the old people were asking that could otherwise be answered by someone doing their own personal research. All in all, working the desk on Thursday served as a nice break in the action to the tedious busywork that I had been doing for the past couple weeks.

Adrian's Blog Post #13(Week 5) - Jewett

My fifth and final week of my internship at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce began where the last week left off. I spent Monday through Wednesday slaving on the membership verification sheets as they were beginning to pile up because all of our members wanted to ensure that their information was verified and updated by the beginning of the tourist season, which was expected to begin in full bloom around Memorial Day Weekend. Fortunately, I was able to continue on the roll that I found myself in the previous week, and I found no trouble getting through the pile of sheets in those three days.
On Wednesday, I was given a new project of stuffing envelopes with cover letters and more member verification sheets for members that were new to the chamber this year. I faced a challenge halfway through the project, when Susan realized that she gave me the wrong cover letters. I then needed to unstuff the already stuffed envelopes and replace the wrong cover letters with the right ones. This project became slightly tedious, but I powered through it and completed the task.
As I continued to work in this internship, I discovered more and more that I want to pursue a degree and develop strong connections so I can avoid internships such as these where I am forced to do busywork that no one else wants to do.

On Sunday’s game we lost our first game to a very good North Andover team. It was our first home game in a while at Magnolia Woods in Gloucester. When I arrived at 9:00 for the 9:30 game, only half of the team had shown up. I didn’t comprehend why this had occurred, but I believe it is what contributed to what ended up being a loss. The kids began shuffling in at around 9:20, which resulted in the players not being able to properly warm up.
At the beginning of the game the team looked incredibly sluggish. The North Andover team looked the opposite, and started the game off with four unanswered goals. It turned out that the team would not be able to overcome this devastating start to the game. The offense simply had zero chemistry today, and had an incredibly small amount of possession time. The defense, though they let in several goals, played fairly well. Due to the fact that the ball was in the defense’s end the entire game, they played as well as they possibly could.
The final score of the game ended up being eight to four with North Andover winning. The team was not happy, as they had high hopes for an undefeated season. However, the team has nobody to blame but themselves for their lack of effort, and poor punctuality.

On Thursday’s practice I was forced to arrive late dude to a practice of my own. When I arrived I was surprised to see another young coach such as myself on the field. The coach was the brother of one of the player’s, a defenseman that I frequently coach to be specific. This coach was a defenseman, like myself, and much to my chagrin was coaching the defense of the team. This bothered me for the coaching of the defenseman is always done by myself.
Not knowing exactly what to do, I asked what duties I could perform without the defenseman, and he gave me the option to help out with either face-offs or help run the offense. I decided to help with the face-offs, as the best defensive player on the team takes many face-offs, and he was working in that drill. I didn’t feel like I was helping a great deal during this drill, as I have never taken any face-offs. I spent a lot of time watching what the new coach was doing with the defense, and was annoyed with his coaching strategy. He was being very impatient with the players, and was teaching incorrect strategies for defense such as going for what are called “home-run” checks as opposed to teaching fundamentals.
The practice ended with the team running a settled scrimmage. During this scrimmage I spent a lot of time with the defense to make up for what I couldn’t do earlier. During this time I pointed out what the other coach taught incorrectly.

On Wednesday’s practice I felt that I really clicked with the entire team. At this point I have learned each players name, which was much harder than I thought it would be. Even the head coach will occasionally blank on a player’s name. I started the practice off the way I always do, by taking the defensive players and running drills specific to what they need to do. We started off with a drill in which the players practiced their clear. I did this because I had the goalie with me, and I didn’t want to leave him out of the action with a strictly defensive drill.
After about twenty minutes of practicing the clear, we moved onto a ground ball drill. Normally, the defenseman take their time with me as an escape from the head coach, and enjoy screwing around. But, this did not happen today. Today I split the defenseman into two teams, putting the best and worst player on one team, and the two mediocre players on the other team. The team that got to seven ground balls first did not have to run a sprint. This brought upon a level of competition that was incredibly refreshing.
As the practice winded down, I felt that I had finally connected with the team, specifically the defense. We now have chemistry, and I understand each player’s strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully this continues up until the game on Sunday.

This past week while on SCORE, I have noticed that a certain type of customer has come into the salon at a much more frequent rate- high school girls.  Clearly, the appointments have been for prom, as students at Ipswich High School and Hamilton High School have both had their proms in the past two weeks.  When dealing with appointments that have to do with prom, there is one hairdresser out of the five that does most of them.  While many of these appointments have been scheduled ahead of time, there have been a few walk-ins.  Usually, the salon has a booked schedule and cannot always accommodate customers looking for an appointment on the spot.  However, there have been a few cases where customers are able to quickly run in and get their hair done that same day.  While there is one hairdresser that deals with prom, there are, of course, always exceptions.  For example, I had my hair done for prom at this salon (and will have it done again this week), with a different hairdresser, although the fact that she is friends with my mom might have something to do with it.  I find it interesting how during certain times of the year, the salon can expect a certain kind of customer.  I could imagine that thy experience the same thing in the spring, when outdoor weddings tend to be popular, as well as other seasonal occasions.

Week 5 Post 2 and 3 Mike Iwata

Today on our second to last day we made sure to get a lot of work done and make lots of headway into consolidating and helping out before we left. The day started by doing a few little things around the store such as fixing hat displays, re arranging the store layout to match the products that were left, and packing up the rest of the goggle displays to be sold outside. After this was done, we were all informed to go outside to the front of the store. A huge fed-ex truck was pulled up and inside of the truck were a ton of pallets with products being shipped to East Coast Alpine. The ups driver handed us boxes and boxes of what we learned were boots from this past winter. We took all of the boxes he handed us and placed them onto pallets of our own and ended up with roughly 32 boxes divided onto three pallets or so. All four of us had jobs while we were outside. Once the fed-ex truck left, we were all told that we had to stay outside because there was roughly $50,000 of merchandise in those boxes and we needed to keep a close eye on them. Three of us had the job of cutting the boxes open and taking the boxes of boots inside of them and placing them onto pods with shelves for easy storing. While three of us did this, Sam took the shipping boxes and folded them nicely to be re used later for moving purposes. This task took a long time as we had to go through 32 boxes with each box containing 5 boxes of boots inside. We took the time to arrange the boots by size onto the pods and once we were done, we had 2 completely full pods arranged by size for the expo in Boston in the summer. This task took about two hours but it was very much appreciated because huge profits are going to be made on those boots because of the price they were bought for.
The last day of SCORE was definitely different than the rest. We were given a surprise as a sort of thank you but we also had to work at the same time. We drove to the Lynn Yacht Club and upon arrival we saw the entire staff waiting with food and a big boat next to them. The boat was out of the water and they were inside going to work. We were told by John that this was his boat and he needed it in the water soon so he thought he would bring us along to help him out and have a semi relaxing day by the ocean at the yacht club while still working. We worked through the day fixing minor cracks on the bottom of the hull with sealant, washing down the inside, buffing the side of the boat, and other various things to get the boat ready to be launched. We were treated to lunch and were given free sunglasses as a thank you for the hard work we had done and were also given the opportunity to work the expo coming up in the summer that we had been working so hard to pack for. This job entails a huge pay and a good time at the same time while we get to sell items for the upcoming winter.

As a hair salon, the business that I am working at obviously makes most of its money through customers getting their hair cut and/or colored.  One aspect of the salon that, while right in front of me I didn’t notice at first, is their large supply of hair products that are sold in the store.  The salon has four long selves in the store on which they display the products that they sell.  Watching the haircuts while I am working, I have noticed that after each cut the hairdressers tend to use a hair product, whether it be a cream or spray, on the customer.  These products come directly from the self, so this works as a sort of advertisement, encouraging the customer to buy a bottle of whatever product was used on their way out.   During my time here I have also seen some sales representatives come into the salon in order to sell their company’s product to the salon owner.  While this selling of products happens in just about every salon that I’ve been in, the impact of it hadn’t caught my mind until I began working here.

Week 5 Post 1 Mike Iwata

Today we took down all of the slat wall from the biggest walls of the store and this required everyone’s work and participation. Two people used drills to unscrew the walls from physical wall of the building behind it. I worked with Ben while he took down the slat wall with the drill and I held it up while he made sure he got all of the screws out. After we got each panel of slat wall down it was now my job to use the hammer and get all the remaining screws from the wall that we stuck. I did this by taking the wall and using the hammer from behind and slamming the screws out from the backside of the slat wall. This task proved to be very long as much of the walls had slat wall. This ended up taking up a good portion of the day and after we finished we went back and picked up each screw and stacked all of the slat wall pieces into piles to be resold. This ended up being a very good idea in the end because on our last day we had a buyer come in and ask for the price of the slat walls and after negotiating, John was able to get a good price for them. After we did this we noticed we needed more pods for stacking display shelves onto and all four of us worked to construct four new pods that held display cases to be shown outside for sale.
